Tajweed (تجويد) literally means ‘to make better’ or ‘to improve’. In the context of Quran recitation, it refers to the set of rules governing the way in which the words of the Quran should be pronounced.
The rules of Tajweed cover characteristics of each letter, how letters interact with each other, how to elongate certain sounds (Madd), and when to pause (Waqf).
Properly applying Tajweed ensures that the meaning of the Quran is preserved. Mispronouncing a letter can sometimes change the meaning of a word entirely.
