Why Tafseer

Why Study Tafseer?

Many of us can recite whole surahs without knowing what they say. Tafseer changes that. When you understand the verses you recite in salah, your prayer gains focus and your connection with Allah grows deeper.

The Quran itself invites us to reflect on its verses. A qualified teacher helps you do that correctly, grounded in the Sunnah and the understanding of the scholars rather than guesswork.

Already reciting fluently? Pair Tafseer with our Tajweed classes or Hifz programme.

كِتَٰبٌ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَٰرَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓا۟ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْأَلْبَٰبِ ﴿٢٩﴾
A blessed Book We have revealed to you, so that they may reflect upon its verses and people of understanding may take heed.

Tafseer, Tarjuma or Tadabbur?

Tafseer, Translation and Reflection Explained

These three words are often mixed up. Here is how they differ and how our course uses each one:

Tarjuma (translation)

A translation gives the meaning of the words in English or Urdu. It is a good start, but it cannot explain context or deeper meanings.

Tafseer (explanation)

Tafseer explains why a verse was revealed, how the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions understood it, and how scholars have explained it. This is the heart of our course.

Tadabbur (reflection)

Tadabbur is personal reflection on what a verse means for your life. Each lesson ends with a short reflection so the Quran becomes part of your week.

Online Tafseer classes or a recorded series?

Recorded lectures are valuable, but in a live one to one class you can ask questions, go deeper into the surah you love, and study at your own pace. Your teacher also checks your recitation of each passage before explaining it.

FAQs

Tafseer Classes: FAQs

What is Tafseer?

Tafseer is the explanation of the Quran: what each verse means, why it was revealed and how it applies to our lives, based on the Sunnah and the classical scholars.

Are your online Tafseer classes taught in English?

Yes. Lessons are taught in clear English, and Urdu is also available. The Arabic verse is always read first, then explained word by word.

Which Tafseer books do you follow?

Tutors draw on well known classical works such as Tafsir Ibn Kathir, and explain them in simple language suited to your level.

Do I need to know Arabic to join?

No. You only need to be able to follow along. Students who can read Arabic also learn key Quranic words as they go.

Can teenagers join Tafseer classes?

Yes. We run a lighter Tafseer track for ages 12 and over, starting with Juz Amma and stories of the Prophets in the Quran.

How long does the Tafseer course take?

Juz Amma takes around three to four months with two lessons a week. A full Tafseer of the Quran is a long term study of several years, and you can pause after any surah.

Can I study Tafseer with a female teacher?

Yes. Sisters can request a female tutor when booking the free trial.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Every new student gets a 3 day free trial before paying anything.

Is Tafseer the same as translation?

No. A translation gives the meaning of the words, while Tafseer explains context, the Sunnah and the scholars' understanding of each verse.
