What Are the 99 Names of Allah (Asma ul Husna)?
The 99 names of Allah, known in Arabic as Asma ul Husna (أَسْمَاءُ اللّٰهِ الْحُسْنَىٰ, “the most beautiful names”), are names and attributes of Allah mentioned in the Quran and the Sunnah. Each name tells us something about who Allah is: His mercy, His knowledge, His power, His forgiveness and His care for His creation.
Muslims learn these names to know Allah better, to call on Him in dua by the name that suits their need, and to strengthen their love and awe of Him. The list above is the well known list of 99 names narrated in Sunan at Tirmidhi, which is the one most Muslims memorise.
99 Names of Allah in the Quran and Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah has ninety nine names, one hundred less one. Whoever ahsaha (learns, understands and acts upon) them will enter Paradise.” (Sahih al Bukhari 2736, Sahih Muslim 2677)
Scholars explain that “ahsaha” means more than memorising a list. It includes learning the names, understanding their meanings, believing in them and letting them shape how we worship and live. Allah also has names beyond these 99, known only to Him, as mentioned in another authentic narration.
