Why Ramadan 2029 Has Such Short Fasts
The Islamic year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so Ramadan moves earlier every year and passes through every season in a cycle of about 33 years. In 2029 it lands just a few weeks after the winter solstice, when daylight in the northern hemisphere is at its shortest. Ramadan will not return to mid January again until the 2060s.

Tips for Fasting in Winter
- Do not skip Sehri. With Sehri ending around 5 to 6 am in most of these cities, a light meal with water, dates and slow carbohydrates is easy to manage.
- Drink through the evening. Cold weather hides thirst. Spread 6 to 8 glasses of water between Iftar and Sehri.
- Iftar at work or school: in the UK and North America Iftar comes before 5 pm on the first days, so pack dates and water in your bag.
- First fasts for children: fasts of 10 to 11 hours are ideal for a child's first full roza.
- Use the long evenings: early Iftar leaves time for Taraweeh, Quran and family before bed.
