Complete Safar Ki Dua from Sahih Muslim 1342
Abdullah ibn Umar reported that when the Prophet ﷺ sat on his camel to set out on a journey, he said Allahu Akbar three times and then recited this full dua. It asks Allah for piety on the trip, an easy road and protection for the family left behind. Read it once at the start of any long journey, such as a flight for Umrah or a drive to another city.
Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun. Allahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina hadhal birra wat taqwa, wa minal ‘amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin ‘alayna safarana hadha watwi ‘anna bu’dah. Allahumma antas sahibu fis safar, wal khalifatu fil ahl. Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min wa’tha’is safar, wa ka’abatil manzar, wa su’il munqalabi fil mali wal ahl.
Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. Glory be to Him who has made this subject to us, and we could never have controlled it ourselves, and surely to our Lord we will return. O Allah, on this journey of ours we ask You for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up its distance for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian of the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from a sad sight, and from an evil return to my wealth and family.
Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar. When returning, the Prophet ﷺ said the same words and added the returning dua shown further down this page.

Sawari Ki Dua: What to Say Step by Step
Ali ibn Abi Talib showed exactly what to say when mounting a ride, and said he saw the Prophet ﷺ do the same (Abu Dawud 2602, also Tirmidhi 3446). Follow this order every time you get into a car, onto a bike or into your plane seat.
- Bismillah. Say it as you put your foot in or sit down.
- Alhamdulillah. Say it once you are settled on your seat.
- Recite the travel dua. “Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha…” to the end.
- Alhamdulillah three times.
- Allahu Akbar three times.
- Ask forgiveness. Finish with the closing words below.
Subhanaka inni zalamtu nafsi faghfir li, fa innahu la yaghfirudh dhunuba illa ant.
Glory be to You. I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.
Ali then smiled and explained that the Prophet ﷺ smiled too, saying that Allah is pleased when His servant says “forgive me,” knowing that no one forgives sins except Him.

Dua for Travelling by Car, Plane, Train or Boat

Many websites list a “car dua” and a separate “plane dua,” but the authentic Sunnah does not divide them. The dua for travelling that the Prophet ﷺ taught for his camel is the same dua we say today in any vehicle. Here is how to use it in practice.
By car or motorbike

Recite the travel dua when you set off on a trip out of town. For a short daily drive to work or school, the Sunnah for leaving home is enough: “Bismillahi tawakkaltu ‘alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah” (Abu Dawud 5095). Many parents still recite the short safar ki dua on every school run so their children learn it naturally.
By plane
Recite the full dua once you are in your seat or as the plane starts moving. During take off you can say Allahu Akbar, and during landing SubhanAllah, following the Sunnah of going up and coming down. If you are flying for Hajj or Umrah from the UK, the Talbiyah comes later at the Miqat; see our guide to the Jeddah airport to Makkah journey.
By train or bus
Say the travel dua when the journey begins. If you change trains, you do not have to repeat it, though remembering Allah at every stage is always rewarded.
By boat or ship
In the name of Allah is its sailing and its anchoring. Indeed my Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.
These are the words of Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) when boarding the Ark. Many scholars recommend them for boats and ships; they are a Quran verse rather than a separate prophetic travel dua.
Duas During the Journey
The road brings its own moments of remembrance. These short adhkar keep your heart connected from the first mile to the last.
A’udhu bi kalimatillahit tammati min sharri ma khalaq.
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.
The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says this when stopping at a place, nothing will harm him until he leaves it.
Safar Se Wapsi Ki Dua (Dua When Returning Home)
When the Prophet ﷺ came back from a journey, he recited the same safar ki dua and added a few words of gratitude. Say them as your city or home comes into view.
Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna, li rabbina hamidun.
We are returning, repenting, worshipping and praising our Lord.
Recite the complete safar ki dua above, then add these words. Sahih al Bukhari 1797 also records the Prophet ﷺ saying them as he approached Madinah.
It was also his habit to enter the masjid first and pray two rak’ahs before going home (Bukhari 3088).
Dua for Someone Who Is Travelling
When a family member leaves for a trip, abroad for studies or for Umrah, you can see them off with this beautiful farewell dua. It entrusts their faith and their deeds to Allah, the best Guardian.
Astawdi’ullaha dinaka, wa amanataka, wa khawatima ‘amalik.
I entrust to Allah your religion, your trust, and the last of your deeds.
The Prophet ﷺ said this when seeing a traveller off. Abu Dawud 2600 is graded sahih by al Albani.

Sunnah Etiquette of Travel
The travel dua is part of a wider Sunnah. These small habits make any journey more blessed.
- Travel with company when you can. The Prophet ﷺ warned against travelling alone at night (Bukhari 2998).
- When three people travel together, they should choose one as leader (Abu Dawud 2608).
- The Prophet ﷺ often liked to set out on a Thursday (Bukhari 2950).
- Shorten four rak’ah prayers to two while travelling, as a gift from Allah.
- Finish your business and hurry back to your family, because travel is “a piece of torment” (Bukhari 1804).
- Bring back a gift and greet your family warmly when you return.
Teach Your Children the Travel Dua
Children copy what they hear in the car. Recite the short safar ki dua out loud at the start of every trip and within a few weeks your little ones will say it before you do. If you want them to read duas and the Quran with correct pronunciation, our teachers can help.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is safar ki dua?
Safar ki dua is the supplication a Muslim recites when starting a journey: “Subhanalladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun” (Quran 43:13 to 14). The complete Sunnah version, with extra lines asking for an easy journey, is in Sahih Muslim 1342.
When should I read the travel dua?
Say Bismillah as you get in or put your foot on the ride, then recite the travel dua once you are seated and the journey begins. You do not need to repeat it at every stop.
Is there a special dua for travelling by plane?
No separate authentic dua exists for planes, cars or trains. The same safar ki dua covers every kind of transport, because the Prophet ﷺ taught it for any ride.
What do I say when I return from a journey?
Recite the travel dua again and add “Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna, li rabbina hamidun” (Sahih Muslim 1342). It is also Sunnah to pray two rak’ahs in the masjid when you arrive.
Is the dua of a traveller accepted?
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ named the dua of the traveller among three duas that are answered without doubt (Abu Dawud 1536, graded hasan).
Can I read safar ki dua in Urdu or Hindi?
It is best to say the Arabic words, because that is how the Prophet ﷺ taught them. If you have not memorised them yet, read from this page or the PDF, and keep the Urdu or Hindi meaning in mind so your heart is present.
Can children learn the travel dua?
Yes. The short version is only two lines, so most children learn it within a week if you recite it together at the start of every car ride.
