بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
اِنَّاۤ اَنۡزَلۡنٰهُ فِىۡ لَيۡلَةِ الۡقَدۡرِ ۖ ۚ1

1. Lo! We revealed it on the Night of Predestination.

تَنَزَّلُ الۡمَلٰٓٮِٕكَةُ وَالرُّوۡحُ فِيۡهَا بِاِذۡنِ رَبِ͏ّهِمۡۚ مِ͏ّنۡ كُلِ͏ّ اَمۡرٍ ۛۙ4
Tanazzalu almala-ikatu warroohufeeha bi-ithni rabbihim min kulli amr
4. The angels and the Spirit descend therein, by the permission of their Lord, with all decrees.
اس میں روح (الامین) اور فرشتے ہر کام کے (انتظام کے) لیے اپنے پروردگار کے حکم سے اترتے ہیں
سَلٰمٌ ۛهِىَ حَتّٰى مَطۡلَعِ الۡفَجۡرِ5
Salamun hiya hatta matla’ialfajr
5. (The night is) Peace until the rising of the dawn.

Tafseer of Surah Al Qadr, Verse by Verse
- Verse 1: We sent it down. Ibn Abbas explained that the whole Quran was sent down on this night from the Preserved Tablet to the lowest heaven, then revealed to the Prophet ﷺ over 23 years. It happened in Ramadan (2:185), and 44:3 calls it “a blessed night.”
- Verse 2: What will make you know? A question that shows how great this night is, beyond what we can imagine.
- Verse 3: Better than a thousand months. Worship on this one night is better than worship for a thousand months (about 83 years) without it.
- Verse 4: The angels and the Spirit descend. Angels come down in great numbers with blessing and mercy, led by Jibril (ar Ruh). Qatadah and Mujahid said the decrees of the coming year are set out on this night (see 44:4).
- Verse 5: Peace until dawn. The night is full of safety and goodness until Fajr. Mujahid said Shaytan cannot do harm in it.
Background of revelation
Ibn Abi Hatim reports from Mujahid that the companions marvelled at a man from the Children of Israel who fought in Allah’s path for a thousand months, and this surah was revealed. The report is mursal, so scholars treat it as background rather than an authentic hadith. A narration in Tirmidhi 3350 linking the surah to later rulers was criticised by Tirmidhi himself and by Ibn Kathir.
Laylatul Qadr: When It Is and What to Do
- When: seek it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan (Bukhari 2017).
- Reward: whoever stands in prayer on Laylatul Qadr with faith and hoping for reward has his past sins forgiven (Bukhari 1901).
- Signs: the sun rises the next morning white, without strong rays (Muslim 762).
- What to do: pray at night, recite the Quran, make long duas, give charity and repeat the dua below.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِ͏ّي
Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.
O Allah, You are the One who pardons, You love to pardon, so pardon me.
اے اللہ! تو بہت معاف کرنے والا ہے، معاف کرنے کو پسند کرتا ہے، پس مجھے معاف فرما دے۔
ऐ अल्लाह! तू बहुत माफ़ करने वाला है, माफ़ करने को पसंद करता है, तो मुझे माफ़ कर दे।

Benefits of Surah Al Qadr
There is no authentic hadith that promises a fixed reward for reciting Surah Qadr a certain number of times, and the “thousand months” belongs to the night, not to the recitation. Its real benefits are clear: it teaches us the value of the Quran and of Laylatul Qadr, it is short enough to recite in every salah, and every letter of it earns ten rewards (Tirmidhi 2910). Many parents also teach it early because it builds a child’s love for Ramadan.
Teach Surah Al Qadr to Kids in 5 Days
- Day 1: Listen to the audio three times together, then learn verse 1.
- Day 2: Add verse 2 and say the meaning: “What will make you know?”
- Day 3: Add verse 3 and explain “better than a thousand months.”
- Day 4: Add verse 4 about the angels coming down.
- Day 5: Add verse 5, then recite the whole surah in salah. Celebrate with a sticker chart.

Surah Al Qadr: Frequently Asked Questions
What is the meaning of Surah Al Qadr?
Al Qadr means “the Decree” or “the Power”. The surah tells us that the Quran was sent down on Laylatul Qadr, a night better than a thousand months, when the angels and Jibril descend and there is peace until dawn.
How many verses are in Surah Qadr?
Surah Al Qadr has 5 verses and 1 ruku. It is the 97th surah of the Quran and is in Para 30 (Juz Amma).
Is Surah Qadr Makki or Madani?
The majority of scholars consider Surah Al Qadr a Makki surah. Some early scholars held that it is Madani, and al Qurtubi and as Suyuti record both views.
Why is Laylatul Qadr better than a thousand months?
Allah says in verse 3 that this one night is better than a thousand months. Ibn Kathir explains that worship on this night is better than worship for a thousand months (about 83 years) that do not contain it.
Which night is Laylatul Qadr?
The Prophet ﷺ told us to seek it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan (Sahih al Bukhari 2017): the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th.

Aisha asked the Prophet ﷺ what to say if she found Laylatul Qadr. He taught: “Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni” (Tirmidhi 3513, hasan sahih).
Is there a special reward for reciting Surah Qadr?
There is no authentic hadith giving a fixed reward for reciting Surah Al Qadr itself. The “thousand months” refers to the Night of Decree, not to reciting the surah. Like every surah, each letter you recite is rewarded.
